Ki is the same as Chi…one is just the Japanese word & the other is the Chinese word.
I have done Aikido for 20+ years.
Yes its a ’self-defence’ artform.. but its VERY effective & when it is taught using Ki.
There’s no English word for KI (or Chi).. but if you concentrate your attention just below your navel & RELAX you develop your Ki.. you can do this in everyday life too.
Theres a great book called ‘Ki in Daily Life’ which explains all.

Ki is about concentrating on a point about an inch below your navel & RELAXING… you then do the martial art from that state of mind & find you have incredible strength which you don’t have when you’re all tensed up.
I’ve seen old ladies put big hunky blokes on the floor with a twist of the wrist.. but it wouldn’t work if they were using muscle power.
Aikido is not just non-striking.. its non-attack! Its self-defence.. but deadly self-defence when done correctly.
