Mental Health Liberation and Anti-Psychiatry Movement
Dr. John Breeding, Ph.D. Psychologist talks about the mental health liberation movement, the anti-psychiatry movement, the movement against psychiatric oppression. Sometimes seen as antipsych or antipsychiary or anti-biological psychiatry.
This is a movement made up mostly of ex-mental health consumers and the family members of ex-mental health consumers who feel they have been damaged by psychiatry. These people refer to themselves as psychiatric survivors. There are also several medical and mental health professionals that reject the belief system of biological psychiatry

Since you’re here, we imagine you or someone you know is going through the devastating issue of anxiety. It can affect the entire day, and your life at the least expected times. The worst part is it arrive from nowhere, and the end result can leave you sick, scared, and overwhelmed (not to mention several other feelings). Some peoples are so worried about the next thing to come; they end up not leaving the house. However, this isn’t a cure to your panic attack.
Michael Kubovy and Judith Shatin, both from the University of Virginia, discuss “The Mind of the Artist.” Debate has long raged about whether and how music expresses meaning beyond its sounding notes. Kubovy and Shatin discuss evidence that music does indeed have a semantic element, and offer examples of how composers embody extra-musical elements in their compositions.
Michael Kubovy is a cognitive psychologist who studies visual and auditory perception.
Judith Shatin is a composer who explores music’s expressive meaning.

Dr Gabor Maté reveals the biological basis of addiction, and the insanity of the statist war on drugs.
http://www.drgabormate.com
Born in Budapest, Hungary in 1944, Gabor Maté emigrated to Canada with his family in 1957. After graduating with a B.A. from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, and a few years as a high school English and literature teacher, he returned to school to pursue his childhood dream of being a doctor.
Dr. Maté ran a private family practice in East Vancouver for over twenty years. He was also the Medical Co-ordinator of the Palliative Care Unit at Vancouver Hospital for seven years.
Currently he is the staff physician at the Portland Hotel, a residence and resource centre for the people of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Many of his patients suffer from mental illness, drug addiction and HIV, or all three.
Dr. Maté has had regular medical columns in The Vancouver Sun and the national Globe and Mail.
Widely recognized for his unique perspective on Attention Deficit Disorder, and his firmly held belief in the connection between mind and body health, he is a sought-after speaker and seminar leader on these topics.
He is the author of four books — When the Body Says No: The Cost of Hidden Stress, and Scattered Minds: A New Look at the Origins and Healing of Attention Deficit Disorder. The third book, Hold on to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers, he co-authored with developmental psychologist Gordon Neufeld. Most recently published is In The Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters With Addiction.

Mental Health Studies focuses on abnormal psychological processes and is intended for students with a strong interest in pathologies of the mind and in their treatment. Co-op Mental Health Studies is offered as a Specialist or Major Program.
The Program combines academic studies in the field of mental health with practical work experience. The work experience provided by the program enables students to explore career opportunities relevant to their studies in mental health. Completion of the program does not, however, represent a professional qualification in psychology, which requires further study at the graduate level. Work settings may also provide students with the opportunity to observe and assist psychologists engaged in clinical practice, hence providing a broader and more informed basis for the selection of a post graduate program appropriate to the student’s talents and interests. Some work settings may provide the opportunity for clinical engagement under close supervision.

In this audio archive of one of Deepak Chopra’s early lectures, he discusses the foundations of mind-body medicine, presenting an extraordinary new approach to healing at the time. Bringing together theresearch of Western medicine, neuroscience and physics with the insights of Ayurvedic theory, he explains that the human body is controlled by a “network of intelligence” grounded in quantum reality. Beyond a superficial psychological state, this intelligence lies deep enough to change the basic pattenrs that design our physiology — with the potential to defeat cancer, heart disease, and even aging itself. In this inspiring and pioneering work, Dr. Chopra offers us both a fascinating intellectual journey and a deeply moving vision of hope and healing.
